Salaam! Salaam! Salaam! Welcome to the Midweek Motivational where I (awesome person writing this post) try and get you through the week when you’re already halfway there. However, I feel obligated to say you and I both know THIS week is a little special.

Special in a sense that it’s the first official week of school.

Unlike any other week, the first official week of school is always significantly harder than the rest (midterm and finals week being a close second). Why? Well, simply because you’ve probably spent three months somewhere else besides school. (Unless you’re one of those overachievers in which case this article probably doesn’t apply to you). But for the majority of us ‘cool’ college kids, we were either shopping, chilling, spending every second with our friends , playing video games, traveling, partying (the halaal way of course) or just taking a well-deserved break from all the work we’ve done the past two semesters.

So whether you enjoyed your summer or not, I’ve constructed three tips that might just help you cope with this bittersweet week:

1. Give Yourself The Talk

Some of us are still in shock  this summer is gone, and in order for us to start getting back into ‘school mode,’ it’s necessary we give ourselves The Talk.  Yes, The Talk.  Sit yourself down, and talk to yourself about how it’s the second day of school, how you’re not in a dream and you do in fact have class in the next 30 minutes, and the fact that summer is OVER. It’s done. Finito. Gone with the wind.

Note: This may take a while if you’ve had an abnormal amount of fun this summer, but take as long as you need seeing as this is vital to your academic, social, and mental stability. Last, always remember if you don’t heed my advice, you’ll be in denial forever, possibly drop out, and then be forced to open a mediocre falafel stand in the middle of nowhere—so give yourself The Talk, and don’t be that guy/girl.

2. Get Organized

This is also pretty important, because whatever your definition of ‘organized’ is, you need to embrace it like 110% this week. Only because now is the best time to do so, since I’m sure you as well as many others would like to start off this semester like an absolute bauss.  At least, I hope that’s the way you want to start it off.

Personally, I recommend you make the most of this week by utilizing the ever-so-popular checklist. Make a checklist of things that you need to get done so you don’t fall behind (i.e., buying your books for those of you still adding/dropping classes, getting other school supplies  you may need, finalizing your schedule, getting your life together, etc., etc.).

3. Enjoy Yourself

So while you’re taking in the fact summer is gone and organizing yourself,  take the rest of this week as a chance to catch up with friends, get some bubble tea/froyo, and maybe even go to a fondue event like I don’t know…the MSA Meet & Greet that’s on Sept. 12th from 7:30 P.M. (shameless plug). Take this week as a chance to make new friends, meet awesome people, and cover things in chocolate. But of course, there are many other awesome events to attend and things to do here at RU, so while you’re getting yourself situated with the new semester, give yourself some time to enjoy yourself! Because if you don’t take a break every now and then, you’ll go crazy, then eventually drop out of school, and open up that falafel stand in the middle of nowhere I mentioned earlier.
